Chancellor Merkel's press conference on May 6 has brought the longed-for ray of light on the horizon for gym operators. Although the regulations for opening studios are a matter for the federal states, some states have already announced concrete plans for resuming the operation of fitness studios. Exact regulations still unclear
Under which conditions and regulations the studios may reopen is still unclear. Each federal state is working out its own regulations for the protection of exercisers and staff.
The pioneer is NRW, where studios will reopen their doors to members as early as Monday, May 11, 2020. What is absolutely clear is that distance regulations, hygiene in the studio, equipment disinfection before, during and after training and the protection of employees will be important points on the agenda of every studio.
What is clear is that workouts will change. Many machines will be closed, showers, locker rooms, swimming pools and wellness areas will not be available. Courses, on the other hand, should soon be possible again - with smaller numbers of people so that distance regulations can be safely observed.
Who opens when?
In North Rhine-Westphalia, fitness studios will be allowed to resume operations from May 11. In Hesse, fitness studios are allowed to open as early as May 15 after submitting a hygiene concept. In Baden-Württemberg, openings are envisaged from Whitsun. In Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, gyms will be allowed to reopen on May 18, while in Lower Saxony they are likely to open as early as May 25.
Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are planning to reopen studios in June, while the situation in the other German states is still unclear. Changes here could be decided and announced in early June. The strict contact restrictions will remain in force nationwide until June 05, so further changes to the measures could come into force around this date.
