What do you train with the stepper?

Just legs and bottom? Or what do you actually train on the stepper?

The stepper is one of the classics among fitness machines and is so inextricably linked with gyms and home training that you probably no longer even wonder what exactly the stepper is used for. The legs, of course - and now you're not wrong with this answer, but it's still worth taking a more analytical look at the stepper. This overview will tell you which muscles are trained on the stepper and what other positive side effects you get from stepper training.

The stair climber in compact format

The stepper simulates climbing stairs, which is how the workout can be roughly summarized. However, it is a little more difficult because, unlike climbing stairs, you are not exposed to the joint strain of stepping down. Instead, the stepper offers you a flowing movement; you always fall into the next step, so to speak. This is good for your joints and trains the same muscles as when climbing stairs. These are primarily the large gluteal muscle and the straight thigh muscle, the large thigh puller and, to a certain extent, the calf muscles. Put simply, training on the stepper primarily targets the front and back of the thighs and the buttocks.

If you hold your lower back while training on the stepper, you will also notice that these muscles are also working. Although the strengthening effect is less pronounced here than with the legs, the upright stepping helps to loosen up the lower back. This is why it is often used for patients with disc problems. As with all endurance training, you also work on improving your cardiovascular system, blood circulation and lung function on the stepper.

Depending on the machine, it is also possible to train with your arms on the stepper, but this requires special bars or pulleys. So you should know exactly what you want to achieve with the stepper - in principle, a more comprehensive full-body workout to lose weight and warm up is always a little more efficient.

Energy, power and toned legs - that's what training on the stepper brings

In short, a workout on the stepper is highly intensive for your legs, as the challenging 'stair climbing' demands a lot of strength from you. You will certainly be familiar with this not only from the stepper, but also from real stairs... At the same time, training on the stepper is also a great endurance workout with a high energy turnover and therefore promotes weight loss and can support muscle building.
