Modern power measurement has become an increasingly important factor in outdoor and indoor cycling training over the last 10 years. Sports enthusiasts can achieve their fitness goals faster and more efficiently. The most accurate performance measurement in indoor cycling has now reached Germany. The fitness industry is benefiting from the new partnership between Schwinn® Indoor Cycling (Core Health & Fitness) and 4iiii® Innovations. This partnership has now seen the official launch of the 4iiii crank arm as an optional upgrade for Schwinn® AC™ and SC series bikes with the MPower Echelon2 console.

What's behind the 4iiii crank arm?

4iiii features unique patented 3D strain gauge technology that captures strain, deformation and compression. It enables measurement of any form of force applied by the rider to the crank arm and accurate recording of the data obtained. This novel 3D technology makes it possible to measure power extremely accurately, even on the indoor cycling bike. The deviation can be only between +/- 1.5% and is therefore currently the most accurate power measurement outside the outdoor area. The system is also characterized by high ease of maintenance. The 2 AA batteries used in the slim crank arm only need to be replaced after approx. 2000 hours of operation.

Who is behind the name 4iiii Innovations?

4iiii Innovations Inc. is an industry leader that manufactures the world's most accurate power meters, heart rate monitors, and other measurement tools to help sports enthusiasts train more effectively, with a focus on performance and success. Founders Kip Fyfe and Victoria Brilz laid the foundation for their longstanding collaboration in this field in 2000 when they launched Dynastream Innovations Inc. With Dynastream, they developed the world's first speed and distance meters, as well as the widely used low-power ANT+ wireless technology for use in wearable devices. In 2006, the company was acquired by the world-renowned Garmin. Motivated to help athletes train more effectively, faster and safer, Fyfe and Brilz created the world's most accurate, lightweight and rugged power meter, whose engineered design has also become standard equipment in bike gear. Through an exclusive relationship with Cycling Canada as sponsor and supplier, the power meters will now be made available to athletes in all Olympic and Paralympic cycling categories for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Now Schwinn is helping bring this innovative technology to the indoor cycling market. Schwinn®, as the brand behind the first production bike designed specifically for indoor cycling, is committed to implementing innovative developments and the best available technologies on the market in its indoor cycling bikes to further expand its pioneering role. This includes updating its bike lines so that riders can benefit from both the same authentic, high-quality Schwinn® products and the latest indoor cycling technology. Measurement from the now optional 4iiii integrated crank arm is transmitted to the enhanced MPower Echelon2 console, allowing users to access and track their workout data in real time. Schwinn is helping to make the measurement data analysis easier for the user through its specialized trainer training courses. During these trainings, trainers will learn everything about measurement and the scientific background to cycling-specific measurement.
