Start-up Grillido has won the meat industry's innovation prize with creative and protein-rich sausage creations. The prestigious prize was awarded at the SÜFFA trade fair on October 18. Sausage revolutionaries Manuel (27) and Marcel Stöffler (25) and Michael Ziegler (27) first combined high-quality meat with fine spices and tasty toppings to create extraordinary sausage variations in their grandma's garage in the fall of 2014. To date, 30 flavors have been developed with star chefs - from chicken with spinach and feta to pork with apricot and pistachios. However, the creations not only impress gourmets, but also the nutrition-conscious: with 4% fat, 20% protein and 0 additives, Grillido fits into every athlete's diet.
"Grillido fills the taste vacuum between steak and sausage. We want to be the first provider on the market to establish a lifestyle brand in the sausage segment," says founder Michael Ziegler about the goals of the sausage start-up, which stands for innovation, quality and sustainability - and is responding to the trend of the times: Conscious nutrition paired with the desire for individualization and sustainability.
Initially, the Grillidos were made in the uncle's sausage factory, but today Grillido produces to international standards and ships its variations throughout Germany thanks to innovative cooling technology. Taste is the top priority for all creations: each sausage undergoes an intensive development and testing process involving several top chefs.

The first protein shake in sausage form

Grillido is listed in high-class restaurants in Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg and Berlin, including the top hotel Schloss Elmau. Hundreds of customers have already ordered their individual sausage boxes on grillido.de and the sausage revolutionaries were winners of the Best of Munich start-up competition - ahead of highly financed high-tech companies. The boys particularly impressed the jury with their smoked version: Grillido Sport is a high-protein meat snack with 0% sugar, 5% fat and 55% protein - and is therefore in high demand from gyms and competitive athletes. "Quasi the first protein shake in sausage form", as Ziegler puts it.
In terms of product development and packaging, the start-up is working with leading universities such as the Technical University of Munich and the Stuttgart Media University, while fulfillment is handled by Caritas, an institution for the disabled. With a sophisticated online marketing strategy and high-quality packaging design, the start-up presents the traditional butcher's trade in an innovative way.
How do you come up with an idea like this? "The sausage is perfect for individualization," says idea generator Stöffler. In addition to the wide range of varieties, Grillidos score points above all with their high nutritional values: "We combine a lot of protein with the best taste. Grillido is a high-protein sports snack for gourmets."
