Indoor cycle or ergometer - a comparison

Not all bike trainers are the same - there are clear differences between indoor cycles and ergometers and if you want to know exactly where they lie and which is the right exercise bike for you, you will find the right information here.

Indoor cycle or ergometer - what do you use to cycle to your sporting goals?

The ergometer is perhaps the most popular exercise bike because it offers a decisive advantage. The electronic resistance system shows you the resistance in watts, making it particularly easy for you to see how much energy you are using. You can therefore easily compare your training with the previous session and the resistance is adjusted depending on your pedaling speed. The resistance can also be linked to your heart rate, so you can train specific muscles or endurance. The indoor cycle, on the other hand, relies on mechanical resistance, so there is no idling. On an ergometer, you pedal and the flywheel weight continues to roll, whereas on an indoor cycle, the pedals keep going as long as the flywheel is turning.

What does this mean in concrete terms? While the ergometer is more of a separate piece of equipment, training on an indoor cycle is very similar to training on a bike. Ambitious cyclists in particular therefore prefer to use the indoor cycle during the winter break. The possible resistance is also much higher here than on an ergometer. The perfect workout for strenuous mountain stages.

Indoor cycles are also relatively simple in design and often offer flexible handlebars, as the whole thing is designed to give you the opportunity to train as if you were on a bike.

As a beginner, however, the indoor cycle often takes some getting used to because there is no idling. You may also be tempted to stop your feet for a moment when you're looking at your playlist, only to be rudely torn from your dreams by the momentum of the pedals.

Spartan training vs. comfort

When it comes to the question of indoor cycle or ergometer, it all depends on what exactly you need and want from your training. If you are looking for a gentle introduction, a comfortable device and an individual training program or a workout on the side, then the ergometer is the right device for you. If, on the other hand, you are looking for an athletic training bike for at home, with which you can push yourself to your limits with full concentration, then the indoor cycle is perfect for you. It's not for nothing that indoor cycles are also called speed bikes...
