COVIDGUM - Can antiviral chewing gum really protect against Corona?

3 Ratings

Initial study results in covid patients show that COVIDGUM®, a chewing gum based on natural essential oils and extracts, can reduce the viral load of SARS-CoV-2 in exhaled air by up to 99% (1). The pilot study, which also demonstrated comparable efficacy with the alpha and delta variants, was conducted at the Institute for Clinical Research Pneumology Frankfurt.

The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads primarily by droplet infection from the mouth and nasal cavity, and can be detected before, during, and after the acute phase of illness, as well as in asymptomatic cases. The duration of exposure and the amount of virus, among other factors, determine whether people who have contact with infected persons become infected themselves. Reducing the viral load in the mouth and thus in exhaled air could help reduce transmission. The test results show that the use of COVIDGUM®, which is registered as a certified medical device, can play an important preventive role in reducing viral transmission of COVID-19, in addition to other protective measures.

Prof. Dr. med. habil. Florian Pfab, technical specialist at Clevergum and inventor of COVIDGUM®:

"The results of the pilot study so far in reducing viral load are promising, and with the number of corona cases on the rise again, we think it is important to share them so that people are aware of the potential benefits of antiviral chewing gum alongside the other usual preventive measures."

PD Dr. phil. Nat. dr. med. habil. Martin Stürmer, virologist and head of the IMD laboratory in Frankfurt, commented on the results as follows:

"The results from this first series of tests are encouraging in that a reduction in the amount of virus in the breath was observed in all test subjects over a period of two hours. There is thus potential for an additional low-threshold prevention offer. Further controlled studies are thus warranted." - Further studies are currently in preparation.

COVIDGUM® is the only chewing gum certified as a medical device to date that has shown consistently positive results in reducing viral loads in the mouth.

Additional protection with antiviral chewing gum

COVIDGUM® antiviral chewing gum effectively reduces the risk of infection by the corona virus and thus prevents the intensity of the disease. This is a useful addition to existing protective measures such as vaccination, safe distance, hand hygiene and oral nasal protection. And all this for only 30 cents per application, which provides protection for about two hours!

This is made possible by the unique combination of essential oils, which develop an antiviral effect through chewing and at the same time provide a pleasant taste.

Each of the herbal ingredients serves a different spectrum of activity, helping to maximize the antiviral effect.

Clinical studies at the Institute for Clinical Research in Frankfurt, Germany, have shown that COVIDGUM® can actually lead to an effective reduction of viral load in the oral pharynx, similar to an antiviral mouthwash, but with a longer-lasting effect.

Ingredients

  • Medicinal chewing gum
  • Essential oils (cinnamon, mint, ginger, lemon)
  • Quercetin, Zinc, Ginseng
  • Spermidine from wheat germ extract
  • vitamin D3, xylitol

The action of COVIDGUM® is based on the interaction of a finely tuned blend of natural essential oils extracted from various medicinal plants whose antiviral effects have been scientifically proven. Each of the ingredients has a different spectrum of action. The composition has a decisive influence on the effect. In addition, the quality of the active ingredients used as well as the composition of the formulation base into which they are incorporated plays a decisive role with regard to the best possible result.

During chewing, these substances are released, which combine in the oral cavity with the saliva that is increasingly released by chewing. The antiseptic mouth rinse thus produced by chewing wets the entire oral cavity and pharynx, and the essential oils also act on the respiratory tract via inhalation. Thus, a topical disinfecting effect can also reduce the SARS-COV-2 viral load.

In the pilot study with Covid-positive patients, the exhaled air was examined under controlled conditions 15 minutes before and after chewing COVIDGUM® over a period of three hours with regard to the SARS Cov-2 viral load. This decreased significantly by over 90% in all patients after application of COVIDGUM®. The decrease of the viral load in the respiratory air lasted for about two hours.

Please note:

COVIDGUM is not a substitute for vaccination! The chewing gum represents an additional protection as a useful extension to the usual known preventive measures (AHA+L+A).
