When buying dumbbells and weights you need to pay attention to the following

What would be a home "gym" or own fitness area without dumbbells and the corresponding weights? In a real sense, you don't have to consider much when choosing dumbbells and weights, but there are still two or three tips you should keep in mind so that you don't make a mistake when buying them.

Number 1: What dumbbells and weights are available and which ones do you need?
Basically, there are three different dumbbell varieties:

  • The barbell
  • The dumbbell
  • The SZ bar

If you want to train at home, you should buy a barbell and two dumbbells. Although you can also use the SZ bar very versatile for a variety of exercises, but in the actual makes no sense.

Number 2: What should you look for when buying dumbbells and weights?

  • The diameter!

If you want to buy dumbbells, you should pay attention to a few essential points, and it does not matter whether it is a barbell or dumbbell. Both are available with diameters of 30 and 50 mm. Who decides for dumbbell and barbell should choose the same diameter for both, so either 30 mm or 50 mm. This then has the advantage that the same weight plates can be used for both and you do not have to buy double weights. This saves money!

  • The length must fit!

If you buy dumbbells, then the correct or rather sufficient length is important. The length is the area where the weights are placed! Because otherwise it can quickly come to the fact that the dumbbells reach their usability limit. The lengths of the barbells should be about 30 cm and the dumbbells about a total length of 40 cm or even more.

  • The length of the barbell!

The barbells are available in a wide variety of lengths. When buying dumbbells and weights, it is important to pay attention not only to the sufficient length of the pick-up, but also to the appropriate length of the barbell itself. This must be long enough to fit on the rack of the weight bench or power rack. For this, it is not the total length of the barbell that must be taken into account, but the internal dimension.

  • Spring locks or rather screw locks?

Most barbells are secured with spring locks and since the barbell is usually in a horizontal position during the workout, this should be sufficient. With a dumbbell, however, you should rather pay attention to a screw lock, because these are in a vertical position during some exercises and so then the weights are better secured.

  • The weight plates - the weights

Here is nothing to consider when it comes to buying the weights, except that they fit on the selected dumbbell. That is, you have to pay attention to the diameter 30 or 50 mm and no weight with a diameter of 50 mm should be used on a 30 mm dumbbell.

Buying dumbbells and weights for beginners and advanced.
Beginners should always buy dumbbells and weights so that the dumbbell bar has about 20 kg available. Because even as a beginner you can perform exercises where you can certainly put on more weight. If you can only train with dumbbells, you should also buy two weight plates of 10 and 20 kg.

Advanced strength athletes need more weight plates and especially more weights. However, since the capacity of the dumbbells to hold the plates is limited, it is not possible to put on as many weights as you want. Therefore, an advanced athlete should rather reach for higher weights with the individual weight plates and do without the weights of 1.25 and 2.5 kg.
