Therapy with microwaves is classified as high-frequency therapy. The different frequencies of high-frequency therapy have in common that under their influence heat is generated in the tissue.

Microwaves are applied by means of the so-called radiation field method. Here, bundled electromagnetic waves are emitted to the tissue by means of radiators of different sizes and shapes (depending on the application). The energy of these waves is directly absorbed in the tissue and converted into heat.

The penetration depth of microwaves is lower compared to short waves. Microwave therapy is preferably used when localized heat of muscles or connective tissue structures such as ligaments, tendons, capsule, etc.) is desired.
