What size should a fascia ball be?

4 Ratings

Self-massage with a fascia ball is an excellent way to relieve tension, eliminate trigger points and break up adhesions. With the multitude of products available, one crucial question arises: what size should a fascia ball be? There is no blanket answer, because it depends on the purpose of use .

How big are fascia balls anyway?

Fascia balls come in different sizes. Most manufacturers have massage balls with a diameter of 8 cm, 10 cm and 12 cm in the program. Lacrosse balls are even smaller. Although these balls, which measure only 6 cm, belong to a completely different sport, they are also very popular for fascia training. For this reason, we would like to mention them here.

The portfolio of fascia balls is rounded off by the so-called Duoball. These are two connected fascia balls, which are ideal for fascia training in the area of the spine. You can also get these in different diameters between 8 cm and 12 cm.

The right ball for the right purpose

The size of a fascia ball influences its properties. Basically, the smaller a fascia ball is, the greater the pressure it transfers to your body on the contact surface. A larger fascia ball, on the other hand, exerts slightly less punctual, but more extensive pressure. To achieve the optimal massage effect, a fascia ball must therefore not be too large. The body part also determines the optimal size that a fascia ball should have.

So which fascia ball is the right one for me?

A large ball with a diameter of 10 cm or 12 cm is excellent for flatter body parts such as the thighs, buttocks and rough working of the back. To really get into the depths and loosen stubborn trigger points in the area of the shoulder blades, for example, an 8 cm small fascia ball or a lacrosse ball is ideal.

Small fasc ia balls are also ideal for shoulder muscles, shins or loosening the plantar fascia under the sole of the foot. For massages along the spine, on the other hand, a medium-sized duoball with a diameter of 10 cm is a good choice.

If you only want to buy one fascia ball, a medium-sized model with a diameter of 10 cm is best. Ideal, however, is the combination of a small ball with 6 cm or 8 cm for the small stubborn spots and a large fascia ball with 10 cm or 12 cm for flat massages.
