Hydrotherapy which is a part of naturopathy uses water to ease or heal chronical and acute diseases, to stabilize body functions and also for prevention and regeneration. Water cures are part of the bathing culture for thousands of years. Already the Romans were convinced of the healing power of water and therefore built public baths. Today doctors, hydrotherapists and alternative practitioners as naturopaths use new or used hydrotherapy equipment on their patients.

How does hydrotherapy work?

Water is used in all three states of aggregation: fluid hot, warm or cold water, ice and damp. Analgesic and antiphlogistic effects are caused by contrast baths and temperature differences. First using cold water leads to a so called vasoconstriction which is followed by a vasodilatation by using hot water. Such treatments have an effect on the distribution of blood, skeletal and dermal muscles, cure burnings and ease pain caused by rheumatic diseases. They are also applied for wellness and spa treatments. Hot baths decrease blood pressure, hot and cold contrast baths support an increase of blood pressure. Metabolism and blood circulation are stimulated and the treatment can be supported by using special salts, oils or herbs. This therapy has many positive effects, e.g. breathing exercises which are performed in water can improve lung functions.
